To strengthen its foothold, Cargill plans to launch new consumer products in the edible oils and wheat derivatives segments. This product expansion is in line with the company’s strategy to focus on offering nutritious and healthy products to Indian consumers.
Deoki Muchhal, Managing Director, Cargill’s food business in India, said “We have about seven-eight products in the pipeline in the consumer food space. These products will serve as the nourishment to Indian consumers and offer value-added products that meet the everyday needs of Indian kitchens.Some of these products are expected to hit the retail shelves in the upcoming festival season. The company, which is already present in the packaged atta segment, is now looking at adding wheat derivative products to its portfolio. We are looking at introducing wheat derivative products such as sooji and daliya. But these will not be plain derivatives. These have been developed to meet the nutrition needs of consumers,” he added.
Mucchal said that even for its wheat flour products, the company focuses on choosing the right grains and processing them in a manner that high fibre content is maintained.
Talking about the company’s strategy in the edible oil segment, Muchhal said: “We have applied science and our global expertise in developing products in the edible oils segment that will have the right configuration of fatty acids for consumption. These products are consumer-insight driven and will contribute to their taste as well as their health,” he added. The company is likely to launch two-three new edible oil products that could include oil blends that offer essential fats.
“We believe these new products’ contribution to our consumer foods business will be sizeable in the next few years. These are closely aligned with the long term vision of our company,” Muchhal said.
The company’s consumer brands in India include Leonardo Olive oil, Gemini, NatureFresh, Sweekar, Rath Vanaspati and Sunflower Vanaspati.
