FSSAI says FBOs can make nutrient function claims for certain edible oils

The FSSAI has elucidated the use of claims on Multi Sourced Edible Oil (MSEO) and stated that food businesses can make nutrient function claims.

Multi Sourced Oil is a blending of two or more edible oils that provides the benefits of two oils in one, improving health and immunity by maintaining a balanced ratio of vital nutrients from different oils.

According to the clarification, food business operators can make nutrient function claims for individual oils as specified in Schedule IIA of the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, even in the case of MSEO, as long as the claims are limited to the major component of the blend.

Nutritional claims on labels or advertisements for edible oil are permitted under Schedule IIA of the Advertising and Claims Regulations.

The FSSAI has specified the conditions for making claims, stating that if the blend contains 70% oil A and 30% oil B but not less than 20%, a nutrient claim can be made only for oil A. Second, if the blend contains 51% oil A and 49% oil B, a nutrition function claim based solely on oil A can be made. Finally, if the blend contains 70% oil A, 25% oil B, and 5% oil C (linseed or chia seed oil), a nutrition function claim for oil A is permitted, as is a claim regarding omega 3 to omega 6 ratio.

However, if the blend contains an equal proportion of each, i.e., 50% of each, then the specified nutrition function claims that are common to both oils can be made. Furthermore, if the component oils of MSEO make contradictory claims, no such claims can be made.

According to the FSSAI, the food authority has received representation from stakeholders seeking clarification on the use of nutrient function claims and other claims for edible vegetable oils, which are a component of MSEO.

Multisource oil combines the benefits of two oils into one, resulting in improved health and immunity by maintaining a balanced ratio of vital nutrients from various oils.

* Some multisource oils can help boost immunity and keep cholesterol levels in check.

* They reduce oil absorption, making food healthier and less sticky.

* They provide the benefits of monounsaturated fats and various healthy vitamins. They contain omega 3,6,9, as well as the proper balance of MUFA and PUFA, which help to maintain heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. They are high in good fats, which help to maintain overall physical health and improve blood circulation.
