Dr. Sagar D. Doifode, Director Animal Husbandry Department Jammu, lately called for the growth of the dairy sector through the formation of milk cooperatives.
The Director, who presided over a meeting of concerned officials convened to discuss modalities for the promotion of cooperatives in the Jammu division in accordance with the government’s commitment, stated that cooperatives are critical for boosting the rural economy, particularly for small and marginal farmers, weaker sections, and women.
Citing the AMUL model, he stated that dairy is one such sector that can grow tremendously if followed on the cooperative society model, thereby assisting in the improvement of related dairy farmers’ income levels and reaching rural prosperity.
The Director, emphasising the importance of collaboration, suggested that officials from the Departments of Cooperatives and Animal Husbandry work together to achieve maximum registrations of dairy farmers under the Milk-Cooperative Societies.
He also stated that from now on, every proposal from the Department of Cooperatives in this regard will be prioritised.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director went on to say that the Department of Animal Husbandry Jammu runs various welfare schemes for dairy farmers, which benefit a large population spread across the Jammu province.
To take advantage of this, he asked the Chief Animal Husbandry officers to exchange the names and addresses of such beneficiaries with the relevant Deputy Registrar Cooperatives so that more dairy producers might be registered.
Officers from the Department of Cooperatives updated the Chair on their department’s initiatives to register more farmers as cooperatives, particularly supporting young involvement in cooperatives, in their address.
