India’s exports of processed food have witnessed an impressive growth of 150% over the past nine years, according to Piyush Goyal, the Minister for Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles. Goyal attributed this remarkable surge to the country’s diverse food industry and the escalating global demand for Indian culinary delights.
Highlighting the pivotal role of large-scale food processing, product branding, and a focused approach to exports, Minister Goyal stressed the importance of providing enhanced value to farmers, creating employment opportunities, and bolstering the nation’s overall earnings.
During this period, India’s overall agricultural exports amassed an aggregate value of approximately $53 billion. The minister underscored the significance of India’s 158 food and agri-geographic indications (GIs) and the identification of 708 unique food items across districts under the One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative.
Minister Goyal made these remarks while inaugurating ‘Indus Food 2024,’ an exhibition showcasing India’s vibrant and diverse food ecosystem at the India Exposition Mart in Greater Noida. The event aims to spotlight the country’s prowess in the food industry and explore opportunities for global partnerships.
India’s economic strength was also emphasized by Minister Goyal, who highlighted the nation as the fastest-growing large economy. He attributed this success to solid macroeconomic foundations and a youthful demographic dividend.
The surge in processed food exports not only reflects India’s prowess in the global food market but also signifies a positive trajectory for the nation’s economic growth and agricultural sector.
