Woolworths, a prominent retailer listed on the JSE, has initiated a recall of its Peanut Butter Dairy ice cream due to potential health hazards. The recall comes after tests revealed higher than permitted levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring substance known to pose risks to human health.
The recall applies specifically to Woolworths’ Peanut Butter Dairy ice cream under its brand name. Customers who have purchased this product are urged to return it to any Woolworths store for a full refund.
While the recall is limited to the peanut butter dairy ice cream, Woolworths reassures consumers that all other products containing peanut butter, including its own range of spreads, are deemed safe for consumption.
This decision follows Woolworths’ proactive testing of various products in response to reports of elevated aflatoxin levels in certain South African peanut butter products. Although Woolworths’ peanut butter products were found to be safe, the company took precautionary measures to assess related items, such as biscuits, sauces, pretzels, energy bars, and ice cream.
Woolworths emphasizes that aflatoxins must be consumed in significant quantities to pose a toxicity risk to humans. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers by implementing thorough quality control measures.
