Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Turmeric Board on Tuesday, announcing ambitious plans to double India’s turmeric production to 20 lakh tonnes within five years. The Board aims to strengthen research and development, explore new markets, and leverage traditional knowledge to boost value-added turmeric products.
“India accounts for 70% of global turmeric production and is known as the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of this golden spice. We are aiming to enhance production to meet growing domestic and international demand,” said Goyal.
Key Objectives and Achievements
- The Board’s establishment follows the government’s October notification, with its headquarters in Nizamabad, Telangana.
- In 2022-23, India cultivated turmeric across 3.24 lakh hectares, yielding 11.61 lakh tonnes. Leading turmeric-producing states include Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
- India contributes over 62% to the global turmeric trade, exporting 1.534 lakh tonnes worth $207.45 million in 2022-23.
The Board plans to focus on major export markets, including Bangladesh, UAE, USA, and Malaysia, with a target to achieve $1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030.
Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the Board’s first chairperson. Representatives from key ministries, including AYUSH, Pharmaceuticals, and Agriculture, along with officials from top turmeric-producing states and Meghalaya (famous for Lakadong turmeric), will also contribute to the Board’s initiatives.
“Through this coordinated effort, India will not only sustain its leadership in turmeric production but also unlock its potential as a significant contributor to the global spice market,” Goyal added.
The move marks a significant step in strengthening India’s agricultural exports and harnessing the economic potential of turmeric.
