India has overtaken Sri Lanka to become the world’s second-largest tea exporter, according to data released by the Tea Board of India.
In 2024, India exported 254 million kg (Mkg) of tea, surpassing Sri Lanka, which had been a close competitor in previous years. Kenya retained its position as the world’s top tea exporter, shipping over 500 Mkg in the same period.
India and Sri Lanka were nearly tied in 2023, each exporting around 231 Mkg. However, India’s 24 Mkg increase in 2024 pushed it past Sri Lanka, marking the country’s second-highest tea export figure ever, just behind 2018’s record of 256 Mkg. The total export revenue for 2024 stood at ₹7,112 crore.
India’s tea exports have traditionally ranged between 200-225 Mkg annually, except for 2018. The industry now aims to reach 300 Mkg by 2030, fueled by rising global demand and favorable policies.
The orthodox tea segment has driven much of this growth, supported by government initiatives at both the central and state levels. Prabir Kumar Bhattacharjee, Secretary General of the Tea Association of India, expressed optimism about future exports, stating, “With the Centre’s favorable export policies and state government support, we expect further expansion in our export markets.”
With this milestone, India solidifies its position as a major player in the global tea trade, and industry experts remain hopeful for continued growth in the coming years.
