India Sends First Sea Shipment of Pomegranates to US, Marking Fresh Chapter in Bilateral Trade

To boost India–US agri-trade, the first commercial sea shipment of Indian pomegranates has successfully reached New York, signaling growing momentum in bilateral trade ties. The shipment included 4,620 boxes (around 14 tons) of the popular Bhagwa variety, sourced from Maharashtra, and marks a milestone in efforts to diversify and deepen agricultural exports.

This development follows Washington’s grant of market access for Indian pomegranates in 2023, with the first air trial shipment conducted shortly thereafter. The success of that trial, where pomegranates retained shelf life for up to 60 days, paved the way for India’s first commercial sea-based shipment in February 2024.

The initiative is part of a broader trade vision as India and the US target $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. A bilateral trade agreement (BTA), including an early harvest deal, is currently under negotiation and is expected to see its first phase concluded by September–October.

“This sea shipment shows India’s ability to deliver fresh fruits over long distances efficiently,” said an official familiar with the export program. The transition from air to sea freight is seen as a cost-effective solution that could make Indian fruits more competitive globally.

To ensure the smooth movement of produce, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) worked with the US Department of Agriculture to facilitate a pre-clearance program for pomegranates in December 2024.

“Indian mangoes have already reached annual exports of 3,500 tons. We’re hopeful that pomegranates will follow a similar growth trajectory in the coming years,” said APEDA chairman Abhishek Dev.

During April–January of FY25, India’s pomegranate exports rose 21% year-on-year to $59.76 million, with major destinations including UAE, Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bahrain, Oman, and now, increasingly, the United States.

This milestone not only highlights India’s export capabilities but also reflects a maturing trade relationship with the US, built on innovation, quality, and strategic cooperation.
