India’s coffee exports registered a robust 26.6% growth during the January–April period of 2026, driven primarily by strong global demand for robusta beans and instant coffee, according to data from the Coffee Board of India.
Total shipments rose to 1.74 lakh tonnes in the four months, compared to 1.37 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period last year. In value terms, exports climbed to ₹936.57 crore from ₹757.07 crore, while unit value realization also improved to ₹4,94,766 per tonne.
The growth was led by a sharp increase in robusta exports, which surged 36% to 85,168 tonnes, reinforcing India’s position as a key supplier in the global market. Instant coffee shipments also expanded, reaching 20,332 tonnes during the period, while re-exports of instant coffee rose significantly to 38,169 tonnes.
In contrast, arabica exports saw a steep decline of 58%, dropping to 30,589 tonnes from 72,479 tonnes a year earlier, reflecting shifting global demand patterns and supply dynamics.
India exports a mix of arabica and robusta beans along with value-added instant coffee products, with the latter gaining traction in international markets due to convenience and rising consumption trends.
Industry experts indicate that the sector is entering 2026 with renewed momentum, supported by higher production estimates, improved price realizations, and increasing global demand. India’s evolving role in the global coffee trade is also being shaped by rising domestic consumption and greater participation in value-added segments.
The Coffee Board has projected a record output of 4,03,000 tonnes for the 2025–26 crop year (October–September), with growth expected across major producing states including Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Arabica production is estimated at around 1,18,000 tonnes, while robusta output is expected to exceed 2,84,000 tonnes, aided by better yields and favourable moisture conditions.
However, weather variability and climate-related risks continue to pose challenges for the sector, even as India strengthens its footprint in the global coffee economy.
