Ferrero North America is bringing the Wonka confectionery brand back to retail shelves with four limited-edition products, reviving the name about a decade after Nestlé discontinued the brand.
The relaunch has been developed in partnership with Netflix and is linked with the streaming platform’s new reality series “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket,” which premiered on September 23. The new confectionery range is scheduled to reach stores in November and combines unusual flavours, colours and textures inspired by the fictional world associated with Willy Wonka.
The lineup includes Wonka Magic Hats, featuring brightly coloured chocolate shells with creamy centres, and Wonka PurplyPurple Chocolate, a milk chocolate bar containing a purple caramel-flavoured milky filling.
Ferrero is also introducing Oompa Loompa Gummies with a berry-cola filling and Wonka Magic Garden Chewy Ropes, which feature a lemon filling and have been designed to resemble grass from the fictional factory garden.
The company has indicated that the limited-edition range represents the beginning of a broader revival, with more Wonka products planned.
Ferrero acquired rights connected with the Wonka confectionery brand when it purchased Nestlé’s U.S. confectionery business for $2.8 billion in 2018. The commercial history of the Wonka name goes back several decades. Quaker Oats funded the original 1971 film in exchange for rights to the Wonka name, while Nestlé took control of the brand in 1988. Nestlé eventually retired it in 2015 following declining sales.
For the new launch, Ferrero’s research and development team experimented with recipes, product shapes and formats connected with the Wonka universe. The company is attempting to preserve the imaginative identity of the brand while making the products relevant to contemporary confectionery consumers.
Gary Youren, Ferrero’s UK head of research and development, said the development process placed taste at the centre of the new range. According to him, the appeal of the fictional sweets was not simply that they were unusual, but that consumers imagined them as products that would also taste good.
Kelly Flaherty, who leads cross-category marketing and innovation at Ferrero USA, described the return as a new chapter designed for consumers who remain “young at heart.”
Ferrero’s revival of Wonka also follows its strategy of developing legacy brands acquired from Nestlé. One of the company’s notable successes has been Nerds, which gained fresh momentum following the introduction of Nerds Gummy Clusters. Ferrero is now applying a similar approach to Wonka, using unexpected textures and combinations to reintroduce the familiar name to a new generation of consumers.
