Food processing is an industry with an immense potential in the northeast and more entrepreneurs from the region to venture into this sector,
According to Union MoS for food processing industries Rameswar Teli, entrepreneurs from the northeastern region have failed to utilize the vast potential of the food processing sector.
The northeastern region, with its vast resources and biodiversity, produces ample fruits and vegetables, which can be processed and marketed in the national and international markets. However, the food processing industry is still highly under-utilized in the northeast, except for a few states like Meghalaya.
At present, the govt is giving 50% subsidy in the plains to anyone setting up a food processing industry. And for hilly terrain, the subsidy amount is 75%.
The government’s aim is to develop the food processing sector and hence batting for huge potential for its development in the Northeastern states.
PMKSY is a comprehensive package which will result in creation of modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet, Teli said that the scheme will not only provide a big boost to the growth of food processing sector in the country but will also help in providing better returns to farmers, doubling of farmers’ income, creating huge employment opportunities especially in the rural areas, reducing wastage of agricultural produce, increasing the processing level and enhancing the export of processed foods.
