Amit Shah, the cooperation minister, emphasized that the contribution of agriculture and allied sectors to India’s GDP can experience further growth by strengthening marketing strategies, with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) playing a crucial role. Speaking at a conclave, he highlighted the potential of making agriculture a profitable business through the adoption of modern technology and effective marketing methods, where Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and FPOs can play a significant role in facilitating this transformation.
Minister Shah pointed out that FPOs formed by PACS are more capable of providing benefits to farmers compared to those established by individuals, companies, or partnerships. He also encouraged existing FPOs to establish agreements with PACS, enhancing their collective efficiency.
Shah acknowledged that agriculture, along with animal husbandry and fisheries, serves as the backbone of the Indian economy. Promoting growth in these sectors will not only boost the country’s GDP but also create job opportunities, benefiting rural communities.
The minister highlighted the various initiatives taken by the Narendra Modi government over the past nine years to bolster farmers’ income in the agriculture sector. He mentioned the substantial increase in the budget for agriculture, which amounted to Rs 1.15 lakh crore in 2023–24, compared to around Rs 22,000 crore in 2013–14. Moreover, he emphasized the significant increase in the minimum support price (MSP) and the strengthening of procurement operations.
The event was also attended by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Minister of State for Cooperation BL Verma.
