Synopsis:
Amul, India’s iconic dairy brand, is gearing up to enter the European market following the successful launch of its milk products in the US, according to Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF). This marks a significant milestone in the brand’s global expansion strategy. India, the world’s largest milk producer, could soon offer the cooperative model as a global framework, as envisioned by the late Dr. Verghese Kurien, the father of India’s white revolution.
Amul, one of India’s most beloved dairy brands, is preparing to expand into the European market, building on the tremendous success of its recent launch in the United States. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul and GCMMF, confirmed this development during the 11th Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on “Amul Model: Transforming Lives of Millions,” held at a private business management institute.
“Amul’s entry into the US market has been highly successful,” Mehta stated. “We are now ready to enter Europe, which will be a historic moment for the brand.” He further emphasized that India, already the largest milk producer in the world, is poised to produce one-third of the world’s total milk supply in the near future.
Highlighting Amul’s global ambitions, Mehta also paid tribute to Dr. Verghese Kurien, founder of Amul, and the cooperative model he pioneered. “If India could offer a gift to the world, it would be this cooperative system, a model Dr. Kurien created. His belief in cooperation has revolutionized India’s dairy industry, making it a lifeline for rural communities,” Mehta added.
Amul, which collects over 310 lakh litres of milk daily through 107 dairy plants across India, offers over 50 products and sells a staggering 22 billion packs annually. With a turnover of INR 80,000 crore, Amul has been recognized as the strongest dairy and food brand globally, owned by 3.6 million farmers.
During the event, Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr. Verghese Kurien, also reflected on her father’s visionary leadership. “More than half a century ago, my father dreamed that a milk-deficient country could become self-sufficient. Today, India stands as the world’s largest producer of milk,” she said.
Fr. S. George, Director of XLRI Jamshedpur, praised Dr. Kurien’s lasting legacy, stating that his life was defined by a deep commitment to transforming the lives of millions through the cooperative dairy model.
As Amul continues to focus on producing protein-rich, organic, and chemical-free products, this expansion into Europe will mark a new chapter in its global journey, reinforcing its mission to deliver quality dairy products while supporting India’s rural farmers.
