Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, is set to invest ₹600 crore in a new integrated dairy plant in Kolkata. The facility will include the world’s largest curd manufacturing unit, with a production capacity of 10 lakh kg per day.
The investment commitment was made during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025, which concluded on Thursday. The dairy plant, to be set up at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, will be developed in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Anand.
GCMMF noted that Kolkata and its surrounding regions have a strong demand for curd, popularly known as tok doi and mishti doi. The new facility is expected to cater to this growing market while reinforcing Amul’s position as the leading fresh milk brand in West Bengal. Currently, Amul sells over 10 lakh litres of fresh milk daily in the state.
The company also highlighted its robust milk procurement network in West Bengal, covering 14 districts and involving more than 1.2 lakh women milk producers. The new dairy plant is expected to further strengthen the dairy cooperative movement under the Ministry of Cooperation’s White Revolution 2.0 initiative.
GCMMF reported an 8% increase in turnover for the 2023-24 financial year, reaching ₹59,445 crore. The company anticipates double-digit revenue growth this fiscal year, driven by strong demand. On average, GCMMF handled 310 lakh litres of milk per day last year, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 500 lakh litres.
As the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, GCMMF has a network of 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat. It ranks eighth among the top 20 dairy companies globally in terms of milk processing, according to the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).
Beyond the domestic market, GCMMF continues to expand internationally, exporting dairy products to around 50 countries. It has recently entered the US market with four fresh milk variants, targeting the Indian diaspora and the broader Asian consumer base.
The Bengal Global Business Summit 2025 saw investment proposals exceeding ₹4.40 lakh crore, as announced by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Amul’s investment in the state is expected to contribute significantly to the region’s dairy industry and economic growth.
