The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have achieved a significant milestone with three of their indigenous food products receiving Geographical Indication (GI) tags. Among the recognized items are Nicobari Virgin Coconut Oil, Nicobar Coconut, and Andaman Karen Musley Rice. This recognition was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 118th episode of Mann Ki Baat.
The GI tags aim to highlight the unique heritage and quality of these products while promoting economic empowerment for tribal communities. The Virgin Coconut Oil, renowned for its unrefined, chemical-free production process, stands out for its purity and high quality. Similarly, the Andaman Karen Musley Rice, cultivated by the Karen community, is valued for its aromatic flavor, nutritional richness, and resilience in saline soils. Nicobar Coconut, known for its rich oil content and strong flavor, further emphasizes the region’s fertile soil and favorable climate.
In addition to these food products, other cultural items from the islands, such as the Nicobari Hodi (outrigger canoe), Nicobari Mat, and Padauk Wood Craft, also secured GI recognition. These achievements are expected to bolster the local economy and bring global attention to the cultural and natural wealth of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The initiative has been supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and local NGOs, ensuring the preservation and promotion of the region’s unique products. With this recognition, the islands are set to expand their footprint in global markets while celebrating their cultural heritage and sustainable practices.
