Andhra Pradesh Sweet Lime Farmers Struggle with Plummeting Prices and Environmental Issues

Farmers in Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai districts of Andhra Pradesh, who cultivate sweet lime across 9,111 acres, are facing significant challenges due to declining market prices and environmental issues. The region, known for its horticultural production, is struggling with reduced rainfall, leading to root rot and pest problems that have negatively impacted yields.

Market prices for sweet lime have plummeted from ₹50,000-60,000 per tonne to approximately ₹12,000, placing financial pressure on farmers. Complaints about the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government’s perceived lack of support for agriculture and the exploitation by brokers—who manipulate price mechanisms—are adding to the distress.

The farming community is calling for government intervention to stabilize prices and support sustainable agricultural practices to alleviate the financial burden and improve conditions for farmers.
