Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd has secured its first institutional order for eco-friendly bioplastic products, marking a significant milestone in its diversification beyond sugar. The order has been placed by the Lucknow Cantonment Board for the supply of compostable and bio-based PLA products.
In a regulatory filing, the company said its bioplastics arm, Balrampur Bioyug, will supply a range of sustainable products, including compostable garbage bags in two sizes, 300 ml PLA bottles, 3D-printed compostable PLA pens and PLA folders. All items are manufactured from Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), a renewable and 100 per cent compostable material known for its low carbon footprint and absence of microplastic residue.
The order assumes significance as it represents the company’s first official institutional engagement in the biopolymer space. Lucknow Cantonment, which spans approximately 6,760 acres, is administered by the Lucknow Cantonment Board under the administrative control of the Director General of Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence.
Balrampur Chini is currently setting up a dedicated PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) manufacturing facility at Kumbhi in Uttar Pradesh with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes. The company expects the plant to become operational by October this year.
Commenting on the development, Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director, Balrampur Chini Mills, said the order reflects growing institutional confidence in India’s emerging biopolymer capabilities. She noted that the adoption of compostable PLA products across operational categories indicates that sustainable materials are moving beyond experimental use to become credible, performance-driven solutions for large-scale institutional deployment.
The company said the development signals a broader transition from fossil fuel-based plastics to bio-based alternatives within institutional systems, particularly amid mounting concerns around single-use plastics and microplastic contamination.
One of India’s largest integrated sugar producers, Balrampur Chini operates 10 sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh with an aggregate sugarcane crushing capacity of 80,000 tonnes per day. It also has distillery operations with a capacity of 1,050 kilolitres per day and co-generation capacity of 175.7 MW.
With its entry into bioplastics, Balrampur Chini is positioning itself at the intersection of agriculture and sustainable materials, leveraging its sugar-based feedstock advantage to tap into the fast-evolving green packaging and institutional procurement ecosystem.
