In a call to action for India’s agricultural sector, Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary has advocated for increased farm exports and reduced imports to strengthen the country’s agrarian economy. Speaking at the 6th edition of the FICCI Agri Startup Summit, Choudhary outlined his vision to make farming more profitable and support agritech startups.
Promoting Agritech Startups
Choudhary highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in agriculture by promoting agritech startups. These startups are crucial for introducing new technologies and practices that can enhance productivity and sustainability in farming.
Addressing Soil Health
A significant concern raised by Choudhary was the deteriorating state of soil health, attributed to the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. To combat this, the government is actively promoting natural farming methods and encouraging a shift away from chemical inputs. The aim is to restore soil health and ensure more sustainable agricultural practices.
Reducing Import Dependency
The minister emphasized that India is already self-sufficient in food grain production and is working to reduce dependency on imports, particularly pulses and edible oils. By focusing on boosting exports, Choudhary believes that farmers’ incomes can be enhanced and the country’s trade balance can be improved.
Water Management
In addition to these measures, Choudhary stressed the importance of water management, including the judicious use and recycling of water. Efficient water use is essential for sustainable agriculture, particularly in the face of increasing water scarcity.
