A new entrant in the global functional beverage market, Caliwater, is betting that cactus-based drinks could become the next big trend in hydration, as consumers increasingly look for healthier alternatives to sugary soft drinks and energy beverages.
Founded in 2021 by actor Oliver Trevena and actress Vanessa Hudgens, the brand uses prickly pear cactus as its main ingredient and positions itself as a low-sugar, low-calorie alternative to coconut water and sports drinks. The company says cactus-based hydration offers natural electrolytes along with added health benefits, making it attractive to fitness-conscious and young consumers.
The brand has drawn attention for its long list of celebrity investors, including singer Demi Lovato, actor Glen Powell, actor Gerard Butler, baseball player Cody Bellinger, and musician Benson Boone, who recently joined the company as a partner. Despite the celebrity backing, the company says its growth strategy will rely more on product taste and health positioning than on star endorsements.
The global hydration drinks category has grown rapidly in recent years, with products such as coconut water, electrolyte drinks, and functional beverages gaining popularity among consumers seeking healthier lifestyle choices. Industry trends in markets like the United States show strong demand for drinks with natural ingredients, reduced sugar, and added functional benefits — a shift that is also becoming visible in India’s urban beverage market.
Caliwater currently offers flavours such as pineapple, watermelon, ginger-lime, and blood orange, and is also promoting the drink as a base for mocktails and cocktails, apart from everyday hydration. The company has additionally launched kid-friendly pouch packs, saying children’s acceptance is a key test of taste in the beverage category.
At present, the brand is available in the United States and Mexico, and the company plans to expand into Canada next. To support its growth ambitions, Caliwater has appointed beverage industry veteran Blair Owens, formerly associated with Hint, Coca-Cola and Monster, as CEO to lead the next phase of expansion.
With global consumers moving towards functional and natural drinks, the company believes cactus-based beverages could emerge as a new category in the fast-growing health and hydration segment — a trend that industry watchers say could eventually influence markets such as India, where demand for better-for-you beverages is rising steadily.
