Cargill Invests ₹300 Crore in Punjab Dairy Feed Plant, Boosting Capacity to 4 Lakh Tonnes

Cargill has strengthened its presence in India’s dairy heartland with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art dairy feed plant at Wazirabad in Punjab, built at an investment of ₹300 crore.

The facility, spread across 15 acres, has an annual production capacity of 4 lakh metric tonnes and is now the company’s largest dairy feed plant in South Asia. It marks Cargill’s second plant in Punjab after Bathinda and is expected to generate over 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Operated by Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health, the plant will manufacture dairy feed under globally recognised brands Provimi and Purina, catering to dairy farmers, producers and feed mills across the region.

Punjab’s Minister of Industries and Commerce, Sanjeev Arora, inaugurated the facility alongside Ravinder Balain, President, Cargill India & Senior Managing Director, Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health, India.

Arora said the investment reflects growing industry confidence in Punjab as a preferred destination for agri and food sector investments. “Punjab continues to be a leader in India’s agricultural and dairy landscape. Investments from global companies like Cargill will further strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem and create employment opportunities for local communities,” he said.

Strategically located in one of north India’s most productive dairy belts, the Wazirabad plant is designed to bring production closer to farming communities. The company said the facility incorporates advanced automation and the latest feed production technologies to ensure consistent availability of high-quality, low-toxin feed compliant with BIS guidelines.

Balain said the expansion will enhance supply reliability and farm profitability. “By expanding our manufacturing presence closer to the key dairy regions of Punjab, farmers will have consistent access to high-quality feed. This will improve milk yields, animal health and farmer incomes, while strengthening the broader dairy ecosystem,” he noted.

India remains the world’s largest milk producer, accounting for over a quarter of global output. Dairy is the country’s largest agricultural product, contributing nearly 5% to the national economy and directly supporting more than eight crore farmers. With rising domestic consumption of milk and value-added dairy products, the demand for scientifically formulated, safe feed has become increasingly critical.

Cargill said the new facility aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative by expanding domestic manufacturing, supporting skill development and stimulating economic activity in surrounding communities. The Wazirabad plant, together with its Bathinda unit, is expected to play a key role in meeting the rising feed demand across core dairy markets in northern India.
