FSSAI Cracks Down on Plastic Use in Idli Preparation in Karnataka

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken serious note of reports regarding the use of plastic sheets in the steaming process of idlis in some Karnataka restaurants. In response, the regulatory body has directed the Karnataka State Food Safety Department to investigate the issue and take immediate action against violators.

The use of non-food-grade plastic in food preparation poses severe health risks, as harmful chemicals can leach into food when exposed to high temperatures. Addressing these concerns, G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, stated, “The use of low-quality or non-food-grade plastics in food preparation, particularly under high temperatures, poses a serious health risk.”

These plastics can release toxic substances such as bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and other harmful chemicals, which may cause adverse health effects. FSSAI is collaborating with State Food Safety officials to ensure a thorough investigation and enforce stringent measures against Food Business Operators (FBOs) and hotels found violating safety norms.

FSSAI has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring consumer safety and urges food businesses to use only food-grade materials in cooking processes. The steaming of idlis should be done following traditional methods or using approved food-grade materials that do not pose a risk of chemical contamination.
