FSSAI Directs Patanjali Foods to Recall Red Chilli Powder Batch

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated Patanjali Foods to recall a batch of its red chilli powder due to non-compliance with safety regulations concerning contaminants, toxins, and residues. The directive, disclosed in an exchange filing by the company, highlights ongoing scrutiny of food safety standards in India’s FMCG sector.

Patanjali Foods, a key player in the competitive FMCG market, offers a diverse portfolio of products, including edible oils, packaged foods, and spices. The company reported a 21% rise in standalone net profit to ₹309 crore for the September quarter, with total income reaching ₹8,199 crore.

The recall comes amid heightened concerns over quality standards in the spice industry. Previously, the sales of certain products by MDH and Everest were suspended in Hong Kong and Singapore due to allegations of excessive levels of a carcinogenic pesticide, prompting the Indian government to conduct inspections of spice manufacturers.

In a separate development, Patanjali Foods is set to establish an oil palm mill in Mizoram. Company representatives recently met with the Chief Minister in Aizawl to discuss the project, signaling the company’s continued expansion in the agro-processing sector.
