The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has constituted a committee to revamp the country’s organic food regulations, aiming to align them with updated global standards.
A senior FSSAI official said the move comes as India updates its organic farming guidelines, necessitating a parallel revision of organic food certification norms. The new framework will cover organic agricultural products and reflect practices followed in advanced economies.
The overhaul also includes updating the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) 2014, which governs production, certification, and use of the India Organic label. Recognized internationally—including by the European Commission, Switzerland, and Great Britain—NPOP ensures India’s compliance with global organic trade norms.
Though no timeline has been announced, the updated standards are expected to strengthen India’s position as a major organic supplier, two decades after the sector gained traction.
