The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strong caution to traders, fruit handlers, and food business operators (FBOs) engaged in fruit ripening processes. The advisory particularly targets those resorting to the use of calcium carbide for artificial ripening, especially prevalent during the mango season. The FSSAI strictly prohibits this practice.
FSSAI has called upon the Food Safety Departments of States and Union Territories to remain vigilant and take decisive action against any violations of these regulations. The authority underlined that the utilization of calcium carbide, a hazardous chemical, poses significant health hazards and is in direct violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with its associated rules and regulations.
By implementing these directives, FSSAI aims to safeguard consumer safety and well-being while upholding the integrity of the fruit market. This initiative aligns with FSSAI’s ongoing endeavours to combat illicit practices and safeguard public health.
