FSSAI Launches Digital Tool to Let Consumers Report Misleading Food Label Claims

To enhance food transparency and consumer empowerment, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has rolled out a new digital utility that allows citizens to report misleading or false claims on food product labels.

Consumers can now raise complaints directly through the Food Safety Connect mobile application or the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal (https://foscos.fssai.gov.in), marking a decisive move by the food regulator to involve the public in upholding food safety and labeling standards.

How It Works:

The platform enables users to submit:

  • A clear front-of-pack image highlighting the questionable claim,
  • The FSSAI license or registration number of the manufacturer, and
  • The e-commerce link, if the product is sold online.

This data will aid authorities in initiating swift, evidence-based action against violators among Food Business Operators (FBOs).

Built on Existing Regulatory Backbone

This initiative complements existing frameworks under the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, and the Labelling and Display Regulations, 2020, both of which require food product claims to be truthful, scientifically substantiated, and not misleading.

It also strengthens the mandate of FSSAI’s Advertisement and Claims Monitoring Committee (AMC), which regularly reviews marketing content and labeling practices for regulatory compliance.

Citizens as Stakeholders in Food Safety

By turning the spotlight on misleading packaging, FSSAI is empowering consumers as frontline watchdogs, enhancing vigilance beyond regulatory offices. “This move helps consumers take charge and hold brands accountable for the health claims they make,” said a senior FSSAI official.

The Food Safety Connect app is currently available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

FSSAI has urged citizens to actively use this tool to promote truthful labeling, informed choices, and a healthier India.
