To empower consumers with better nutritional information, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated the display of key nutritional information, including total sugar, salt, and saturated fat, in bold letters and an increased font size on the labels of packaged food products.
This decision, aimed at promoting healthier food choices and combating the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), was taken during the 44th meeting of the Food Authority, chaired by FSSAI Chairperson Apurva Chandra. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced the approval of the proposal as part of amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
The new labelling requirements are expected to contribute significantly to public health by providing clear and accessible nutritional information. The draft notification for the amendment will be open for public suggestions and objections, underscoring the collaborative approach to enhancing food safety and standards.
In addition to this amendment, FSSAI has been proactive in issuing advisories to prevent misleading claims by food business operators. Recent directives have addressed the misuse of terms like ‘Health Drink’ and ‘100% fruit juices’ on product labels and advertisements, ensuring transparency and authenticity in food marketing.
Senior officials from various ministries, including Health and Family Welfare, Commerce, and Consumer Affairs, and representatives from industry associations, consumer organizations, and research institutes, participated in the meeting, reflecting a comprehensive effort to promote consumer welfare and public health.
