FSSAI Orders Monitoring of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Sales Amid Pesticide Concerns

In response to media reports highlighting the presence of pesticides and harmful chemicals in excessive amounts in fresh fruits and vegetables sold in major cities across India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken immediate action. The authority has written to all Food Safety Commissioners in the country, drawing their attention to these concerning reports.

Additionally, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of the issue of excessive pesticide use by farmers. The NHRC has taken measures to minimize pesticide risk and promote alternative cultivation systems.

To address the menace of excessive pesticide, use during the pre-marketing treatment of fruits and vegetables, the FSSAI has urged strict vigilance on Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved in manufacturing, repacking, and selling fresh, surface-treated, and minimally processed fruits and vegetables. The primary goal is to ensure that these products comply with the provisions of the FSS (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations.

The FSSAI has also stressed the importance of employing measures such as surveillance, enforcement, and awareness activities to monitor the compliance of fresh fruits and vegetables with food safety standards. To educate consumers and food businesses about these issues, the authority encourages conducting awareness-building measures through information, education, and communication activities under the “Eat Right” initiative in fruit and vegetable markets/mandis.

By taking proactive steps to regulate the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables and ensure their safety, the food authority aims to safeguard public health and consumer confidence in the quality of these essential food items.
