The Indian government is taking significant steps to modernize the country’s food processing sector, with a focus on boosting domestic machinery manufacturing. Food Processing Industries Secretary Subrata Gupta recently held a roundtable meeting with industry leaders to address key challenges and opportunities in the sector.
During the meeting, Gupta emphasized the critical role of equipment manufacturers in driving modernization and enhancing efficiency in food processing. “The equipment and machinery sector plays a pivotal role in driving growth and modernization of India’s food processing industry,” he stated.
Industry representatives called for a dedicated mechanism within the ministry to attract investments and standardize locally produced machinery. Key discussion points included raw material availability, regulatory compliance, technology transfer, research and development, and the establishment of quality standards for domestic machinery.
The ministry urged stakeholders to collaborate with Invest India, the government’s investment promotion agency, and submit detailed proposals to address the sector’s challenges effectively.
The initiative aims to position India as a global hub for food processing machinery manufacturing, fostering innovation, improving competitiveness, and reducing dependency on imports. With a strategic focus on technology and standards development, the government seeks to unlock the full potential of India’s food processing sector in the coming years.
