Gwalia Sweets is a well-known brand in Gujarat. Established in the year 1994 by Deepak Sharma and Jay Sharma, today they have over 25 stores across Gujarat and Canada, including an international sweets store named “Gwalia Baklawa” primarily focused on serving Middle Eastern desserts to cater to the sweet tooth of younger generations.
Jay introduced us with Gwalia Baklawa. He started his first huge high-end retail outlet at Sindhu Bhawan Road in 2017. The biggest challenge was to maintain the authenticity and taste of these Middle Eastern sweets, and what better way to achieve this than by hiring a team of chefs from the Middle East? They sell various sweets like Baklawa, a rich dessert made of layers of phyllo filled with premium-quality chopped nuts such as pistachio, dates, almonds, and cashew, sweetened and held together with honey or sugar syrup. Baklawas are pure vegetarian sweets and have a unique blend of various textures and tastes. The shelf life of these sweets is around two months at room temperature, which makes them an excellent gifting option.
They also make live Knafeh, a popular Turkish dessert made with spun pastry soaked in sugar syrup and layered with cheese and pistachios. This Turkish dessert is a rich treat to gorge on after a light lunch or dinner. They also make Turkish Delights in a plethora of flavours such as rose, mango, raspberry, and strawberry.
Gwalia Baklawa impressed me with the diverse selection of Dubai Dates and Khalijee (almond-filled dates, cashew-filled dates, dry-fruit-filled dates, chocolate-dipped dates, etc.). They also have various Egyptian delicacies such as Ma’amoul Cookies (date-filled cookies), fresh melt-in-the-mouth Bassima (a popular Egyptian coconut cake), and Basbousa (a semolina cake, wherein the semolina batter is baked in a sheet pan and then sweetened with orange flower water or rose water).
