Hubergroup Print Solutions has launched Hydro-X Contact, a new generation of water-based inks and overprint varnishes specifically developed for direct food contact applications. The innovative modular system is designed to support the growing demand for sustainable, recyclable mono-material packaging, offering both creative freedom and regulatory compliance.
Part of the established Hydro-X product family, the Hydro-X Contact system enables brilliant print quality, enhanced design flexibility, and efficient integration into existing flexographic printing setups, including central impression and stack presses. It is especially suited for a wide range of packaging formats — from elegant premium chocolate wrappers to vibrant children’s snack boxes and eco-friendly takeaway containers.
The solution also supports the shift from plastic films to paper-based packaging, helping brands reduce their reliance on multi-material structures. By eliminating the need for extra plastic barriers in certain applications, Hydro-X Contact simplifies packaging and increases printable space, creating new possibilities for engaging branding and storytelling.
Hubergroup highlights the environmental advantages of this new system. As a water-based solution, Hydro-X Contact significantly reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and enhances packaging recyclability, aligning with the EU’s evolving packaging regulations and the broader transition to a circular economy.
“This is a future-proof system that delivers food-safe results while offering excellent color vibrancy and print reliability,” said André Garber, Head of Business Development, Water-Based Systems & UV Coatings at hubergroup. “Hydro-X Contact simplifies production and ensures consistent results across varied packaging types.”
Alessandro Sabbatini, Product Manager for Hydro-X, added, “With Hydro-X Contact, printers can explore entirely new creative territories—from bold shelf differentiation to unique interior printing for an enhanced unboxing experience. It’s a game-changer for both design and functionality.”
Hydro-X Contact is also compatible with hubergroup’s suite of sustainable technologies, including barrier coatings against grease, water, vapor, and oxygen, as well as heat-sealable overprint varnishes, making it a comprehensive solution for modern food-safe packaging.
hubergroup will showcase Hydro-X Contact at Labelexpo Europe, taking place from September 16 to 19, 2025, at stand 4D19. Visitors can interact with experts, explore product capabilities, and discover how the system can be tailored to meet specific packaging needs.
