India & Bhutan Seal Landmark MoU to Boost Cooperation in Agriculture and Allied Sectors

In a significant step to reinforce bilateral cooperation, India and Bhutan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technical collaboration in agriculture and allied sectors. The MoU was signed in Thimphu by Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL), Royal Government of Bhutan.

Strengthening Partnership for Food Security:

The agreement marks a milestone in the longstanding partnership between the two nations, highlighting their shared vision of food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity. The framework covers key areas such as agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, value chain development, and exchange of technical knowledge and expertise.

Joint Technical Working Group Formed:

To implement the MoU effectively, the first session of the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) was convened immediately after the signing. Both sides finalized the Terms of Reference for JTWG and identified priority areas for immediate collaboration. Officials from both countries underscored the importance of this mechanism in driving practical cooperation.

Focus on Innovation & Climate Resilience:

During the meeting, Secretary Chaturvedi outlined India’s agricultural priorities, challenges, and new initiatives. He highlighted the use of digital solutions for farmers, promotion of climate-resilient practices, improved risk mitigation strategies, and enhanced credit availability. These initiatives, he noted, could offer valuable learning for Bhutan’s agricultural landscape.

Comprehensive Areas of Cooperation:

Detailed discussions during the JTWG session emphasized cooperation in a wide range of fields including agriculture, livestock, agricultural marketing and cooperatives, food processing, the seed sector, research and technology exchange, and capacity building. Both countries reaffirmed their intent to strengthen collaboration across the entire agricultural value chain.

Next Steps in Bilateral Engagement:

It was agreed that the next JTWG meeting will be hosted in India at a mutually convenient date. The visit of India’s Agriculture Secretary to Bhutan also reinforced the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two nations, further strengthening their close ties of friendship and cooperation.
