The Kasimedu fishing harbour is set for a significant transformation with modernization work now underway. The project, managed by the Chennai Port Trust, is expected to be completed by March next year, according to Port Trust chairman Sunil Paliwal.
The modernization will occur in two phases. Phase one has a budget of ₹116 crore, and phase two will receive an additional ₹10.60 crore, bringing the total project cost to over ₹127 crore, official data revealed.
The comprehensive modernization plan includes the construction of state-of-the-art fish handling sheds, a ship uplift facility, and the installation of vessel monitoring and control systems. Additionally, the harbour will see the construction of a high-rise compound wall, a peripheral road connecting internal roads, new parking facilities, and improved water amenities.
The modernization will significantly benefit the local fishing community. The ship uplift facility and boat repair complex, combined with increased harbour depth for deeper draft vessels, will enhance operational efficiency. Centralising boat repair activities in a dedicated, advanced facility will reduce downtime and extend the lifespan of fishing vessels. Improved infrastructure such as better roads, lighting, secure entry/exit points, and enhanced water facilities will create a more efficient working environment.
The project also emphasizes improved hygiene and sanitation within the harbour. New sanitary complexes and a comprehensive waste management system will promote a cleaner and healthier environment for the fishermen. Upon completion, the harbour will boost the livelihoods of local fishermen and enhance the regional economy, Paliwal said.
