The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is actively implementing several flagship schemes aimed at boosting the food processing sector across India. These include the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), and the Prime Minister Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme. These initiatives are designed to modernize infrastructure, improve supply chains from farm to retail, increase farmer incomes, create jobs, reduce waste, boost food processing, and enhance exports.
Under PMKSY, which provides credit-linked financial assistance to entrepreneurs, Rs 5,520 crore has been allocated for the 15th Finance Commission cycle. As of June 2024, MoFPI has approved 41 megafood parks, 399 cold chain projects, 76 agroprocessing clusters, 588 food processing units, and several other projects aimed at strengthening the sector.
The PMFME scheme, with an outlay of Rs 10,000 crore for the 2020-2025 period, has supported the setup and upgradation of microfood processing enterprises, with 92,549 enterprises receiving approvals by June 2024.
The PLISFPI scheme, launched to create global food manufacturing leaders and promote Indian brands internationally, has an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore and is being implemented through 2026–27. So far, 172 companies have been sanctioned under this initiative.
In addition to these schemes, MoFPI is also supporting research and development through partnerships with institutions such as the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship & Management (NIFTEM) in Kundli and Thanjavur. Since 2017, 72 R&D projects have been sanctioned, with Rs. 26.12 crore in subsidies provided.
