Nandini deploys AI-powered product counting to modernize dairy operations

Karnataka’s leading dairy brand Nandini is rolling out an artificial intelligence-based product counting system across its production and packaging facilities as part of a major push to digitize and modernize its operations.

The initiative, led by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), is designed to improve accuracy in product tracking, streamline inventory management and reduce dependence on manual counting across key dairy units.

The new system uses a combination of AI, machine vision and advanced counting algorithms to automatically identify and tally dairy products such as milk packets, curd cups and other packaged items as they move through packaging and dispatch lines. By deploying the technology at processing plants and distribution centres, Nandini aims to minimise human error, enable real-time inventory visibility and improve traceability from production to retail shelves.

KMF officials said the AI-driven solution will significantly enhance operational reliability while allowing staff to focus on higher-value activities. Routine tasks such as counting and verification will be handled by automated systems, reducing labour intensity and speeding up workflows, particularly in high-volume facilities.

The technology is also expected to help cut operational costs and improve audit accuracy, as every unit of product can be digitally tracked and verified. Over time, the AI platform could be integrated with broader supply chain and quality monitoring systems, strengthening data-driven decision-making across Nandini’s production, warehousing and logistics network.

The move reflects a broader shift within India’s dairy sector, where digital tools such as AI, IoT and data analytics are increasingly being adopted to improve efficiency, quality control and supply chain transparency.

The phased rollout of the AI-based counting system is set to begin at major Nandini facilities in the coming weeks, positioning the cooperative at the forefront of technology-led dairy operations in India.
