Norfolk Healthy Produce and All Aussie Farmers Partner to Launch Bioengineered Purple Tomato in Australia

In a groundbreaking move toward health-focused innovation in agriculture, Norfolk Healthy Produce (NHP) has partnered exclusively with All Aussie Farmers to introduce The Purple Tomato™ to the Australian market. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the commercial journey of this unique bioengineered tomato, which is set to redefine fresh produce offerings with its vibrant colour and potential health benefits.

About The Purple Tomato™:

The Purple Tomato™ stands out for its rich, deep-purple hue, a result of its high anthocyanin content, beneficial antioxidants commonly found in berries like blueberries and blackberries. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory and health-promoting properties, potentially offering consumers added nutritional value with every bite.

The tomato was developed using advanced bioengineering techniques, building upon pioneering research from the laboratory of Prof. Cathie Martin at the John Innes Institute in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional tomatoes, the Purple Tomato is enriched with anthocyanins throughout the entire fruit, not just the skin.

The Partnership:

Under the agreement, All Aussie Farmers will act as NHP’s exclusive commercial distribution partner in Australia, managing the rollout and ensuring regulatory compliance. To proceed with environmental release and commercial distribution, All Aussie Farmers has applied for a license from Australia’s Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR). The tomato will only be released once this license is granted.

Strategic Significance:

Travis Murphy, Managing Director of All Aussie Farmers, emphasized the alignment of the partnership with their commitment to nutritious and innovative produce:

“We are thrilled to partner with Norfolk Healthy Produce to bring The Purple Tomato to Australian consumers. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission of offering forward-thinking agricultural advancements that benefit both consumers and farmers.”

Echoing this optimism, Nathan Pumplin, CEO of Norfolk Healthy Produce, added:

“All Aussie Farmers’ robust distribution capabilities and commitment to premium produce make them the ideal partner. Their attention to quality and consumer experience assures us that Australians will enjoy The Purple Tomato™ at its finest.”

Launch Timeline:

Pending regulatory approval, The Purple Tomato is expected to hit select Australian markets in 2026, bringing a new wave of functional, aesthetically distinct, and potentially health-enhancing produce to consumers.
