In a significant step towards improving nutritional security in India, the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the non-profit organization TechnoServe to enhance the fortification of edible oils nationwide.
The initiative aims to ensure the delivery of quality-assured fortified edible oil to Indian consumers, in alignment with national health priorities and the voluntary fortification guidelines set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
According to a joint statement, the collaboration will focus on building the technical capabilities of edible oil producers through targeted training programs, workshops, and industry-wide seminars. It will also promote best practices in manufacturing and hygiene while strengthening internal quality assurance and external quality control mechanisms for fortified oil production.
SEA President Sanjeev Asthana emphasized that the association will actively involve its member processors in training initiatives, offer administrative and communication support, and facilitate coordination with stakeholders to encourage voluntary fortification and compliance with food safety regulations.
The partnership also includes engagement with policymakers and industry leaders to promote the widespread adoption of fortified edible oil — a vital move considering India’s status as one of the largest consumers of edible oil globally and the growing need to address micronutrient deficiencies among its population.
