Budget 2025: Focus on Food Processing, Makhana, and Pulses

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled key initiatives for the food processing sector in the Union Budget 2025, focusing on enhancing India’s agricultural and nutritional landscape. The budget introduces major reforms aimed at boosting food processing, promoting pulses self-sufficiency, and supporting Bihar’s makhana industry.

Key Announcements for the Retail and Food Processing Sector:

1. Strengthening the Food Processing Industry

The government has announced the establishment of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management in Bihar. This initiative aims to:

  • Enhance farmers’ income through value addition.
  • Create opportunities for skilling, entrepreneurship, and employment.
  • Support the fruits and vegetable sector to align with the increasing health-conscious consumer base.

2. Atmanirbharta in Pulses

A six-year national mission for self-sufficiency in pulses has been introduced, with a focus on toor, urad, and masoor dals. Additionally, the budget includes a national initiative on high-yield seeds to improve agricultural productivity and reduce import dependence.

3. Dedicated Support for Bihar’s Makhana Industry

Recognizing Makhana as a high-value crop, the government has established a dedicated Makhana Board in Bihar. This move is expected to:

  • Boost production, processing, and value addition.
  • Improve marketing strategies and create better price realization for farmers.
  • Enhance domestic and export potential for makhana-based products.
