Walmart Unveils AI ‘Super Agents’ to Drive E-Commerce, Challenge Amazon

Walmart announced plans to launch a suite of AI-powered “super agents” aimed at enhancing the shopping experience and optimizing its vast retail operations.

These generative AI agents are designed for four key user groups: customers, store employees, suppliers and sellers, and software developers. The retail giant says these “super agents” will serve as the new primary interface for all AI-driven interactions, replacing existing tools and laying the foundation for future innovations.

The move is central to Walmart’s strategic goal of boosting e-commerce, with the company targeting 50% of its total sales from online channels within the next five years. Last year, Walmart posted a record $648 billion in sales, underscoring the scale at which these digital upgrades will operate.

“By deploying agentic AI across our ecosystem, we’re reimagining how people shop, work, and engage with Walmart,” said Hari Vasudev, Chief Technology Officer, Walmart U.S. These AI agents will assist in everything from product discovery and order returns to event planning and kitchen inventory insights, Vasudev added.

One such agent, Sparky, is already live on the Walmart app, assisting shoppers with product suggestions, review summaries, and personalized recommendations. The upgraded “super agent” version of Sparky will soon be able to reorder groceries, help plan events—like a unicorn-themed birthday party—and even suggest recipes using computer vision to scan the contents of a shopper’s fridge.

Beyond consumer-facing tools, Walmart’s AI strategy includes tools for developers and backend systems, intended to drive efficiency in logistics, inventory management, and supplier engagement.

While Walmart is optimistic about AI’s potential, the company acknowledges ongoing debates around the economic and employment impact of automation in retail. Nevertheless, Walmart’s aggressive tech pivot is widely seen as an attempt to stay ahead of arch-rival Amazon, which is also heavily investing in AI for retail, fulfillment, and seller services.

With this rollout, Walmart is signaling a new era of AI-first commerce—one where intelligent agents are at the center of every interaction, decision, and transaction across the Walmart ecosystem.
