India’s Data-Driven PDS Reform ‘Anna Chakra’ Enters Global Finals of Franz Edelman Award 2026

India’s flagship food distribution reform, Anna Chakra, has earned global recognition after being shortlisted among six finalists for the 2026 Franz Edelman Award, one of the world’s most prestigious honours in operations research and analytics. The recognition places India’s Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) alongside leading international organisations deploying analytics for large-scale societal impact.

Often described as the “Nobel Prize of Operations Research and Analytics”, the Franz Edelman Award celebrates initiatives that demonstrate measurable economic, environmental and operational outcomes through advanced analytical applications. Anna Chakra stood out for its role in modernizing India’s Public Distribution System (PDS), one of the largest food security programmes in the world.

The initiative was developed through a multi-stakeholder collaboration involving the Government of India, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in India and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi). At its core, Anna Chakra is an operations research-based decision support platform that uses sophisticated optimization models to design state-specific logistics strategies for food grain movement.

By streamlining how grains are transported and allocated across the PDS supply chain, the system supports the efficient delivery of subsidized food grains to over 81 crore beneficiaries, many of whom belong to India’s most vulnerable communities. Since its nationwide rollout, the platform has delivered estimated annual savings of ₹250 crore while improving reliability and responsiveness across the distribution network.

Beyond cost efficiencies, Anna Chakra has also contributed to sustainability outcomes. The optimization of transport routes and logistics planning has resulted in a reported 35% reduction in emissions, aligning the programme with India’s broader climate and environmental commitments.

The initiative’s analytical impact has already been recognized domestically. Earlier in January 2026, Anna Chakra received the CDSA–ORSI Excellence in Management Science and Analytics Practice Award at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, further validating its effectiveness and scalability.

Commenting on the global recognition, Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, Department of Food & Public Distribution, said the achievement highlights how scientific approaches and institutional partnerships can transform large public systems. The winner of the 2026 Franz Edelman Award will be announced at the INFORMS Analytics Plus Conference, scheduled to be held in National Harbour, Maryland, USA, from April 12 to 14, 2026.
