Tata Starbucks Eyes 8,000 Stores in India, Plans to Add Up to 100 Outlets Annually

Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL) has outlined an ambitious growth roadmap for its coffee retail venture, Tata Starbucks, with plans to add 50 to 100 new outlets every year and a long-term vision of expanding to nearly 8,000 stores across India.

Speaking at the company’s annual shareholder meeting, TCPL Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the joint venture sees substantial headroom for growth in the Indian market and has already achieved a significant milestone by becoming EBITDA-positive in FY26.

“We have had discussions with our partner, and we think eventually the company can have 8,000 stores in India. We are continuing to add 50 to 100 stores,” Chandrasekaran said.

Tata Starbucks, a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks Corporation, currently operates 502 stores across 80 cities in India. The company has been steadily strengthening its footprint in metropolitan markets while accelerating expansion into Tier II and Tier III cities.

According to TCPL’s latest annual report, the coffee chain recorded a 7 per cent increase in revenue to ₹1,367 crore during FY26. The venture also narrowed its net loss to ₹98.95 crore, supported by store expansion and positive same-store sales growth.

Chandrasekaran noted that the business has now turned profitable at the operating level, marking an important step in its growth journey. Going forward, the focus will be on improving margins and driving overall profitability alongside network expansion.

The premium café chain competes with major players including Costa Coffee, Tim Hortons, as well as homegrown brands Third Wave Coffee and Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters.

Industry observers believe India’s growing café culture, driven by urbanisation, rising disposable incomes and a young consumer base, presents a significant opportunity for organised coffee chains. While the United States remains Starbucks’ largest market with nearly 16,900 stores, China has already crossed the 8,000-store mark, a benchmark Tata Starbucks now believes India can eventually achieve.
