India has achieved a new milestone in horticultural exports with the first shipment of fresh litchi from Uttarakhand reaching Italy, opening a new international market for the state’s premium fruit produce. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The maiden consignment, carrying one metric tonne of fresh Dehradun litchi, marks Uttarakhand’s entry into the European fresh fruit market and is expected to create fresh opportunities for growers and exporters in the region.
Known for its rich sweetness, vibrant red appearance, pleasant aroma and high-quality pulp, Dehradun litchi has built a strong reputation in domestic markets over the years. Popular varieties cultivated in the region include Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana, which are valued for their taste and quality characteristics.
Officials said the climatic conditions of districts such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar provide favourable conditions for litchi cultivation, helping produce fruits with premium attributes suitable for export markets.
The export initiative has also delivered economic gains to growers, with farmers reportedly receiving around 25% higher prices compared with prevailing domestic market rates. Industry stakeholders believe this could encourage more farmers to adopt export-oriented cultivation practices and quality standards.
The shipment was enabled through coordinated efforts involving APEDA, the Uttarakhand government, exporters, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), logistics service providers and other stakeholders across the supply chain.
Industry observers believe the development could support broader diversification of India’s fresh produce exports while increasing the global visibility of horticultural products originating from the Himalayan region. The successful entry of Uttarakhand litchi into Italy is also expected to strengthen India’s position as a supplier of premium-quality fresh fruits in international markets.
