As part of its growing crackdown on food safety violations across the country, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has called on citizens to play a more active role in monitoring the food ecosystem by reporting unsafe food practices through its Food Safety Connect mobile application.
In a post on X, the regulator urged consumers to report instances of unsafe food, unhygienic kitchens and poor food handling practices, saying public participation is essential to strengthening food safety standards.
“Don’t just notice it, report it! Unsafe food practices affect everyone. Turn your awareness into action with the Food Safety Connect App,” the authority said.
The appeal comes as FSSAI has significantly intensified inspections, surveillance and enforcement actions aimed at curbing the manufacture, sale and distribution of unsafe food products across India.
In one of the latest enforcement actions, the Food Safety Department ordered the closure of a spice manufacturing unit in Lucknow after inspectors allegedly found adulterated materials during a raid. Authorities seized the suspected adulterants and collected food samples for laboratory analysis to determine compliance with food safety standards.
The regulator has also widened its scrutiny of the e-commerce food sector. Recently, FSSAI issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints alleging the delivery of expired, spoiled and contaminated food products, including rotten eggs, expired whey protein, damaged packaged goods and other unsafe food items.
The notices also highlighted alleged licensing discrepancies, incorrect FSSAI licence details linked to certain sellers and shortcomings in seller compliance and consumer grievance redressal mechanisms.
FSSAI has sought a comprehensive response from Swiggy Instamart outlining its food safety protocols, quality assurance systems, inventory management practices, hygiene measures and corrective actions. The regulator has warned that failure to submit a satisfactory compliance report within the stipulated timeline could invite legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Swiggy Instamart has stated that it is reviewing the concerns raised by the regulator and is working closely with authorities to address the issues.
The latest developments reflect FSSAI’s increasingly proactive regulatory approach in 2026, with greater emphasis on compliance, consumer participation and stricter enforcement across both traditional food businesses and digital commerce platforms.
