Protein, Nutrition Drive India’s Changing Snacking Choices: Healthy Snacking Report 2026

Indian consumers are increasingly choosing snacks based on nutrition, protein content and ingredient transparency, according to the Healthy Snacking Report 2026, unveiled at the Indian Healthy Snacking Summit (IHSS) 2026.

Wonderful Pistachios partnered with Farmley for the summit, where findings based on responses from more than 6,000 consumers across metro, Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities were presented.

The report indicates a significant shift in how Indians evaluate everyday snacks, with health and nutrition playing a greater role alongside taste.

According to the findings, 86% of Indian snackers consider protein an important factor while choosing snacks, indicating that protein is increasingly becoming a key purchase consideration rather than an optional nutritional benefit.

The report also highlights differences in snacking behaviour across age groups. Consumers between 16 and 35 years are more likely to snack to satisfy cravings, while those above 35 increasingly turn to snacks for an energy boost.

Despite these changing motivations, tea-time continues to remain India’s most preferred snacking occasion across generations, followed by mid-morning snacking.

The findings point towards growing opportunities for nutrient-dense foods, including nuts and other protein-rich snack options, as consumers seek products that combine convenience, taste and nutritional value.

California pistachios, for instance, provide six grams of protein per 28-gram serving, positioning them within the growing category of plant-protein-based snacking options.

Shail Pancholi, Country Director – India, Wonderful Pistachios, said changing consumer preferences are creating new opportunities for healthier snacking categories.

“India’s snacking habits are evolving rapidly, with consumers looking for foods that deliver both taste and nutrition. The growing focus on protein, clean ingredients and mindful eating presents a significant opportunity for pistachios to become a more integral part of everyday snacking,” Pancholi said.

He added that the growing interest in plant protein and nutrient-rich foods could further support the adoption of pistachios as an everyday snack.

The report reflects a broader change in India’s snacking market, where consumers are increasingly looking beyond indulgence and convenience and paying closer attention to nutritional value, ingredients and the role snacks play in their daily diets.
