Global beverage companies are accelerating investments in functional ingredients as rising consumer demand for health and wellness transforms one of the industry’s fastest-growing categories. Established brands such as PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Kraft Heinz, BellRing Brands and Unilever are rolling out reformulated products and entirely new beverage concepts featuring protein, electrolytes, vitamins, collagen and naturally occurring caffeine to capture emerging consumer preferences.
Over the past six months, several legacy brands have expanded beyond their traditional offerings by introducing functional variants designed to deliver benefits such as hydration, sustained energy, mental focus and improved nutrition. The strategy reflects an industry-wide shift as beverage makers seek new growth avenues in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
Among the notable launches this year, Kraft Heinz’s Capri Sun entered the functional beverage segment with Capri Sun Hydrate, a juice pouch fortified with electrolytes and positioned as one of the first hydration drinks developed specifically for children. PepsiCo and Unilever-owned Pure Leaf introduced its first sparkling functional tea aimed at promoting balanced energy and mental clarity rather than high-intensity stimulation.
Coca-Cola also expanded its sports nutrition portfolio through Bodyarmor Fit, the brand’s first sparkling sports drink featuring added electrolytes and caffeine. The product is designed to appeal not only to athletes but also to consumers seeking everyday hydration.
Meanwhile, BellRing Brands entered a new category by launching a protein soda under its Premier Protein brand, reflecting growing interest in protein-enriched beverages beyond traditional shakes. PepsiCo also refreshed Muscle Milk with a reformulated recipe offering higher protein content while removing artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners to strengthen its position in the competitive protein beverage market.
In another major reformulation, PepsiCo announced that Gatorade will eliminate artificial colours from several of its flagship flavours as part of a broader brand refresh focused on everyday hydration and cleaner ingredient labels.
The latest launches underscore how beverage companies are moving beyond conventional soft drinks to meet consumer demand for products that combine refreshment with functional health benefits. Industry players are increasingly looking for untapped market opportunities by creating new beverage categories, including protein sodas, sparkling hydration drinks and enhanced teas, rather than relying solely on traditional sports and energy drinks.
As consumers across age groups continue to prioritise wellness, hydration and clean-label products, functional beverages are expected to remain a key innovation and growth driver for global beverage manufacturers. Established brands are increasingly leveraging their strong consumer recognition while introducing differentiated formulations to stand out in an increasingly competitive functional drinks landscape.
