The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food-business licences of four Domino’s Pizza outlets operated by Jubilant FoodWorks, citing violations of food safety and hygiene standards.
Three of the affected outlets are in Mumbai, located in Vile Parle West, Borivali West and R-City Mall in Ghatkopar. The fourth is in Malakapour, Karad, in Satara district, officials told PTI.
FDA inspections identified a range of deficiencies, including inadequate sanitation and hygiene, pest-control lapses, improper food storage and insufficient temperature monitoring. Officials also flagged a lack of proper segregation between raw and ready-to-eat food, along with incomplete food-safety documentation.
The suspensions were imposed under the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
The action against Domino’s comes as Maharashtra’s food regulator steps up inspections of food businesses across the state. The FDA recently suspended the licence of a Blink Commerce facility in Mumbai following findings of extensive cockroach infestation and improper storage of food items.
Reliance Retail has also come under scrutiny after officials allegedly found live larvae in a popular sweet product at one of its outlets, adding to concerns over food-handling and storage practices among large retail and food-service operators.
Wider crackdown
The FDA’s intensified enforcement is extending beyond restaurants and retail outlets. On Wednesday, officials inspected 434 licensed Ayurvedic drug manufacturing establishments across Maharashtra to assess compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, and Schedule T, which sets out Good Manufacturing Practices for Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani medicines.
The inspection drive uncovered serious manufacturing and quality-control deficiencies at several facilities. The FDA subsequently issued show-cause notices to 135 manufacturers, directing them to explain the violations identified during inspections and take corrective action to comply with prescribed standards.
For food and consumer businesses operating in Maharashtra, the latest actions signal a more aggressive regulatory environment—one in which hygiene, storage, pest control and documentation failures can quickly translate into licence suspensions and enforcement proceedings.
