Coca-Cola Expands into Prebiotic Soda Market with New Functional Range

Coca-Cola is expanding its presence in the growing better-for-you soda segment by adding prebiotic fibre to three of its major soda brands, as consumers increasingly seek beverages with functional benefits.

The company will add 6 grams of prebiotic fibre to Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Sprite Zero Sugar and Fresca. The products are scheduled to begin a pilot launch at the end of October across parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The move places Coca-Cola in direct competition with fast-growing prebiotic soda brands such as Olipop and Poppi, the latter of which was acquired by PepsiCo last year. PepsiCo has also introduced a prebiotic version of its flagship cola as competition in the category intensifies.

Coca-Cola had previously entered the prebiotic soda segment through its Simply juice brand with the launch of Simply Pop. The latest rollout extends the functional beverage strategy to some of the company’s core soda brands.

The expansion is part of Coca-Cola’s broader innovation programme for 2027, which includes products targeting growing consumer interest in beverages offering benefits beyond refreshment and taste.

Beyond prebiotic beverages, Coca-Cola is also expanding its functional portfolio. The company plans to introduce a zero-sugar Vitaminwater formula in March 2027, with the grape-flavoured drink containing vitamins C, E, B3, B5, B6 and B12.

The company is also strengthening its position in protein beverages with the planned January launch of Core Power Banana, available in formulations containing 26 grams and 42 grams of protein. The launch will mark the brand’s first new flavour in nearly a decade.

At the same time, Coca-Cola continues to invest in indulgent soda flavours, including Coca-Cola Cherry Lime and Strawberry Float, which combines strawberry and vanilla flavours.

The company’s latest launches reflect a broader shift in the beverage industry, where major players are attempting to balance traditional soda consumption with growing demand for lower-sugar and functional products.
