European Dairy Major Arla Foods Enters Protein Water Market with New Whey-Based Drink

European dairy major Arla Foods has entered the protein water category with the launch of Arla Protein Water, a whey-based beverage targeting consumers seeking convenient, protein-rich hydration options.

The product has been introduced in Denmark, Arla’s home market, with an initial rollout through petrol stations and fitness centres. The company said the new beverage is designed to complement its existing protein portfolio and provide consumers with an easy option for on-the-go consumption.

Each 500ml bottle contains 12g of whey protein derived from milk, along with electrolytes. The drink contains zero sugar and provides 50 calories. It is manufactured and bottled in-house by Arla and carries a recommended retail price of DKr25 (approximately $3.74).

Henrik Lilballe Hansen, country director of Arla Denmark, said consumer interest in protein was expanding beyond traditional nutrition products, creating demand for new beverage formats.

“Protein is no longer a niche. It has become part of many consumers’ daily choices, which is why we also see a demand for new formats,” Hansen said. He added that the launch offers consumers another convenient way to incorporate protein into their daily routines while drawing on Arla’s expertise in milk and whey proteins.

The company is initially focusing on convenience and foodservice channels rather than an immediate supermarket launch. An Arla spokesperson said the company would assess market response and gather insights from the initial distribution before considering expansion into retail stores.

Although the launch is currently limited to Denmark, Arla has indicated that the product could be introduced in other markets if it proves successful. The company has a significant presence across Europe, including Sweden, Germany and the UK.

The move reflects growing interest among beverage manufacturers in functional drinks that combine hydration with nutritional benefits. Protein water is emerging as an alternative to conventional protein shakes, particularly among consumers looking for lighter beverage formats.

Arla’s entry also adds momentum to a category attracting interest from companies beyond the traditional dairy sector. Earlier this year, UK soft drinks company Nichols introduced MyProtein Clear Whey Protein Water through a licensing agreement with THG. UK-based functional hydration brand Ipro Hydrate has also expanded into the category.

With its established dairy and whey protein capabilities, Arla is looking to extend its presence in the growing functional beverage market. The success of its Danish launch could determine whether protein water becomes a broader part of the company’s international product portfolio.
