Dairy cooperative giant Amul is set to take a major step in expanding its eastern India footprint with the foundation stone laying ceremony of its ₹700 crore dairy processing plant in West Bengal on June 14. The event is expected to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The new facility will be established at the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah district and marks one of the largest investments in the state’s dairy sector in recent years.
Confirming the development, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul’s parent organization, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, said the company has received 15 acres of land for the project.
“We have received 15 acres. The project will have an investment of ₹700 crore,” Mehta said.
According to industry sources, the upcoming plant will have the capacity to process up to 15 lakh litres of milk per day and manufacture around 10 lakh kilograms of dairy products daily. The facility will produce a range of value-added products including dahi, mishti doi, yoghurt, lassi and buttermilk.
The project is expected to strengthen Amul’s presence in eastern India while creating new opportunities for dairy farmers, milk procurement networks and local employment.
The investment proposal was first announced during the 2025 Bengal Global Business Summit, where Amul outlined its plans to expand operations in the state. Earlier this month, Mehta met West Bengal government officials to discuss the project and the future development of the dairy sector in the region.
State leaders have highlighted the investment’s potential to boost economic activity, generate employment and support the growth of the dairy ecosystem in West Bengal.
With the new plant, Amul aims to deepen its reach in a market known for strong demand for fermented and traditional dairy products such as mishti doi, while enhancing its processing and distribution capabilities across eastern India.
