Assam Govt impose ban fishing nets

The Deputy Commissioner (in-charge) of Sivasagar, Pronab Jit Kakoty vide an order issued on April 1, 2021, under Section 144 CrPC, 1974 and in accordance with the Assam Fishery Rules, 1953 as well as the Assam Fishery (Amendment) Rule, 2005.

News from the seafood category brings alerts to use a certain size fishing nets during harvesting the waters for marine food. The Deputy Commissioner (in-charge) of Sivasagar, Pronab Jit Kakoty vide an order issued on April 1, 2021, under Section 144 CrPC, 1974 and in accordance with the Assam Fishery Rules, 1953 as well as the Assam Fishery (Amendment) Rule, 2005, has strictly imposed ban on the use of certain fishing nets and traps of different mesh and size during the breeding season of fishes starting from April 1 to July 15, 2021 with both days inclusive of the months.

Referring to the ordinance, prohibition has been imposed upon the use of borjal, bhorjal, fasijal, mahajal, and all such kinds of nets with mesh squares having less than 7 cm bar or 14 cm mesh in any proclaimed fishery or so during the period. Further, a strict ban is also imposed on the use of above nets or any other nets with a mesh having squares less than two and a half inches square during the period in any proclaimed fishery or so.

Adding to the restriction on fishing, the restriction is also enforced on catching or killing of breed fishes (fishes carrying eggs) of the following species, namely, Rahu (Catla), Chital, Ghoria, Khoria, Mirika (Mrigal), Mali (Calbasu or Koliajara), Pithia (Mahasul), and Kuri (Gonius) during the breeding season of fishes starting from April 1 to July 15 in any declared fishery or so.

This decree comes into force with immediate effect enveloping the entire district and will remain in force for a period of 60 days from the date of issue of the order or until further notice. Any violation of this order will be punishable under Section 188 of IPC.
