In a move aimed at facilitating smoother outbound shipments, India has eased export regulations for both basmati and non-basmati rice to select European markets, granting a temporary exemption from mandatory inspection certification.
According to a government notification issued on Friday, exporters shipping rice to countries including members of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland will not be required to furnish the usual inspection certificate from the Export Inspection Council of India for a period of six months.
The relaxation is expected to streamline export procedures and reduce compliance timelines for Indian exporters, particularly at a time when global demand dynamics remain fluid.
The notification clarified that the certification requirement continues to apply specifically to these European destinations under normal circumstances, while other European countries are already exempt. The temporary waiver effectively extends this exemption to the listed nations for the next six months.
Industry observers believe the move could enhance India’s competitiveness in key premium markets, especially for basmati rice, by reducing procedural bottlenecks and enabling faster shipments.
The decision also reflects a broader policy push to support agricultural exports and maintain India’s strong position in the global rice trade, where it remains one of the largest exporters.
